Artist’s Statement:
I have been working as a ceramic sculptor for the past eight years. In this time I have produced a body of work expressing primarily my interest in the semi-abstraction of the human figure. My work is informed art historically by Cubism and Surrealism. I am interested in the break-up of the formal figure to investigate expressive possibilities. My work is a reflection of my attraction to tribal art, veneration objects in culture, and religious/political figure types from through the ages. I use flat strips and slabs of clay cut and shaped to build a figure. Pieces are bisque fired, then stains and glaze applied in a second firing; or slips, under-glazes and stains are applied to green ware in one firing. The pieces are generally frontally viewed.
